On March 12, 2018, 41-year-old Daniel Laverne Beams of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, was fatally shot outside the Economy Inn at 1113 9th Avenue Southwest in Bessemer. Responding officers discovered Beams lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to his upper body; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
