In the late hours of a Sunday evening in Bessemer, Alabama, a tragic event unfolded that would cut short the life of 18-year-old Jaterrius Dewayne Conwell. On February 3, 2019, the young man, known to his friends and family as 'Jay,' was in a vehicle with a group of friends. Inside the car, what began as playful handling of a firearm took a devastating turn when the weapon discharged, striking Conwell.
Realizing the gravity of the situation, the friends in the car rushed Jaterrius to a
local hospital. Medical staff were able to stabilize him initially, providing a brief glimmer of hope. However, his injuries were severe, necessitating a transfer to UAB Hospital in Birmingham for more advanced care. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, approximately an hour after the transfer, Jaterrius Dewayne Conwell succumbed to his injuries.
The Bessemer Police Department launched an investigation into the shooting. Authorities reported that there were a total of four individuals inside the car at the time of the incident, with others standing nearby. Investigators began the process of interviewing all known witnesses to piece together the exact sequence of events that led to the fatal shooting.
