Maurice 'Mo' Thomas, a 23-year-old African American male, was fatally shot at the Gettie Boyz Motorcycle Club, a private establishment located at 22nd Street and First Avenue North. The incident, which also resulted in injuries to two other individuals, unfolded around 3 a.m. following an altercation between two men inside the club.
It remains unclear if Thomas was directly involved in the initial dispute that led to the gunfire.
At the time of his death, Thomas was a student at Alabama A&M University, where he was majoring in economics and was a defensive back for the university's football team, the Bulldogs. A graduate of McAdory High School, he had earned a football scholarship and was preparing to enter his final semester of college. He had just started a summer job at Children's Hospital. Remembered by friends and family as a young man with a bright future, his sudden death sent shockwaves through the community.
In the wake of the shooting, authorities arrested Terry Towns and charged him with murder and attempted murder in connection with the incident. Towns, who was 34 years old at the time of his arrest on July 3, 2010, was held on bonds totaling $195,000. The investigation into the shooting drew significant attention in Bessemer.
The funeral service for Maurice Thomas was held on July 10, 2010, at the Roosevelt City Church of Christ, with his burial following at Highland Memorial Gardens. The community mourned the loss of the young athlete and student, whose life was ended in a senseless act of violence.
