On February 26, 1916, in Bessemer, Alabama, Chief of Police Thomas Benjamin "Ben" Wallace, aged 51, responded to an incident involving two detectives and a prisoner at the corner of 3rd Street and 19th Street. The detectives had arrested the man a few blocks away and were escorting him to jail when he began to resist.
