In the early morning hours of June 30, 2016, the life of 29-year-old Dontavious Jones, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short in Opelika, Alabama. At approximately 1:30 a.m., Opelika police were dispatched to the 500 block of South Antioch Circle after receiving reports of gunfire. Upon their arrival, they discovered Jones suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was quickly transported to East Alabama Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
The investigation into the shooting led authorities to identify 25-year-old Chasman Reese as the primary suspect in the homicide. A warrant for murder was issued for his arrest. The search for Reese crossed state lines, culminating in his capture just a day after the shooting. On July 1, 2016, members of the United States Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force located and apprehended Reese at a motel in Jonesboro, Georgia.
Following his arrest, Chasman Reese was charged with the murder of Dontavious Jones. He was initially held in the Clayton County Jail in Georgia, awaiting extradition back to Alabama to face the charges against him. The swift arrest brought a sense of relief to the community, which had been shaken by the violent incident. Law enforcement officials highlighted the importance of community cooperation in being able to quickly identify and locate the suspect in the case.
