In the early evening of February 8, 2022, the life of 37-year-old Jela Shermarke Marshall of Opelika, Alabama, was tragically cut short. Police responded to a call of a person shot in the 900 block of Morgan Avenue at approximately 6:42 p.m. Upon their arrival, they discovered Marshall in the roadway, suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite the efforts of first responders, he was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Lee County Coroner.
The Opelika Police Department quickly launched a
homicide investigation into the shooting death of the Black male. Their efforts led to a swift arrest in the case. On February 9, 2022, the day after the fatal shooting, authorities took 32-year-old Gregory Geraldo Miles into custody.
Miles was subsequently charged with the murder of Jela Marshall and was booked into the Lee County Jail. While an arrest has been made, the Opelika Police Department has stated that the investigation into the circumstances surrounding Marshall's death remains ongoing. Authorities have continued to appeal to the public for any information that may be pertinent to the case, encouraging individuals to contact their detective division or a secret witness hotline.
