In the summer of 2018, the life of 28-year-old Brucetavius D. Frazier, a Black male known for his outgoing personality, was cut short in a fatal shooting in Opelika, Alabama. On the evening of July 23rd, Frazier was driving his white Dodge Challenger with a friend, Lartosha Robinson, in the passenger seat. As they approached an intersection in the 400 block of W.E. Morton Avenue, a young man engaged Frazier in a verbal altercation.
The confrontation quickly escalated, and the individual opened fire on the vehicle, striking Frazier in the head.
Despite his severe injury, Frazier's friend managed to steer the car to a safer location on Toomer Street before fleeing the scene. Emergency services were called to the location around 7:48 PM following multiple reports of gunfire. Responding officers discovered Frazier unresponsive in his vehicle. He was immediately transported to Piedmont Columbus Regional Medical Center in Columbus, Georgia, where he succumbed to his injuries two days later.
Investigators at the scene recovered 14 9mm shell casings near the intersection, indicating the shooter's position during the attack. Surveillance footage from the area captured the incident, showing a young man interacting with Frazier's vehicle before firing multiple shots and fleeing on foot. This footage, along with witness statements, including the account from Robinson, was crucial in identifying a suspect.
The investigation led police to 18-year-old Gregory Jacquan Todd of Cusseta, Alabama. Robinson later positively identified Todd from a photographic lineup. Approximately three weeks after the shooting, U.S. Marshals apprehended Todd in Camp Hill, Alabama. During questioning, Todd confessed to the shooting. He stated that he had seen Frazier in the area previously and felt agitated by what he perceived as Frazier paying attention to him, which led to the fatal confrontation.
In December 2020, Gregory Jacquan Todd pleaded guilty to charges of murder and attempted murder. He received consecutive sentences of 30 years for the murder of Brucetavius Frazier and 25 years for the attempted murder of Lartosha Robinson. He also received concurrent 20-year sentences for other offenses. Todd is currently incarcerated at the Easterling Correctional Facility in Clio, Alabama, with a potential parole eligibility date in September 2033.
