On October 4, 1993, Sergeant Roger Lamar Motley Jr., a 38-year-old officer of the Opelika Police Department in Alabama, lost his life in the line of duty. At the time of the incident, Sergeant Motley was on an errand to purchase supplies at a local store, formerly located in the Pepperell Corners Shopping Center, which was then a Wal-Mart.
