On September 17, 2022, at approximately 8:10 p.m., Opelika Police Officers responded to a shooting at the intersection of Fruitland Avenue and Auburn Street. Upon arrival, officers located 53-year-old Jeffery Lamar Dowdell suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced deceased at the scene at 8:30 p.m. The suspect(s) fled prior to officers' arrival, and there was no immediate threat in the area.
