On October 18, 2011, 18-year-old Jamal Marcel Butler was fatally shot on W. E. Morton Street in Opelika, Alabama. The incident occurred during a confrontation, leading to Butler's death from gunshot wounds.
In the aftermath, 18-year-old Jadarius Lamar Dowdell was identified as a suspect. Two days later, Dowdell surrendered to authorities and was charged with Butler's murder.
