In the summer of 2017, a dispute over personal property in Opelika, Alabama, turned deadly, leading to the shooting death of 23-year-old Shaquille O'Brian Jones. The incident, which occurred on July 11, 2017, cut short the life of the young man, a 2012 graduate of Beauregard High School and a member of Zion At The Hill A.M.E. Zion Church.
The investigation into Jones's death quickly focused on 20-year-old Vantavious Quintez Hughley.
Authorities alleged that an argument between Hughley and Jones escalated, resulting in Jones being fatally shot. For two weeks, Hughley managed to evade capture, prompting a search by law enforcement.
The search for Hughley concluded on July 26, 2017, when he was apprehended following a traffic stop. He was subsequently charged with murder in connection with the death of Shaquille Jones. The driver of the vehicle, 19-year-old Alexis Dunlap, was also arrested and faced charges of first-degree hindering prosecution, attempting to elude law enforcement, and resisting arrest for her alleged role in assisting Hughley.
