On a summer evening in Opelika, Alabama, a young man's life was cut short in a hail of gunfire. Deon Monzel Daniel, a 20-year-old male from Pike Road, was killed on July 10, 2025. The incident, which also left two other individuals wounded, unfolded in the 700 block of Herndon Street.
Responding to reports of gunfire at approximately 10:40 p.m., Opelika police officers arrived at a chaotic scene. They discovered three individuals suffering from gunshot wounds.
While two of the victims were transported to local hospitals for medical treatment, Daniel was pronounced dead at the scene. The Lee County Coroner's Office later confirmed his identity.
The subsequent investigation by the Opelika Police Department revealed a complex and dangerous situation. It is believed that Deon Monzel Daniel, along with two other men, were involved in a robbery at the residence on Herndon Street. During the course of this alleged crime, an exchange of gunfire occurred between the residents and the suspects, which ultimately resulted in Daniel's death.
In the days that followed, law enforcement officials made arrests in connection with the fatal shooting. One of the first suspects taken into custody was 18-year-old Kentravious Rashaun Lark of Tuskegee. Following his arrest, another suspect, 35-year-old Maturius Maurice Daniel of Pike Road, was also apprehended. Both men face a string of serious charges, including murder, attempted murder, first-degree robbery, and first-degree burglary for their roles in the incident that led to Deon Monzel Daniel's death.
