In the autumn of 2016, the life of 25-year-old Marvin Smith Jr. was tragically cut short in Birmingham, Alabama. On the evening of October 8th, a Saturday, police were called to the UAB Hospital, where a man had arrived in the lobby seeking help for another individual in a vehicle outside. That individual, Marvin Smith Jr., was found unresponsive, having sustained a gunshot wound.
Despite the urgent rush to the hospital, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The man who had sought help, Carlos Heard, was identified as Smith's boyfriend. In the initial stages of the investigation, Heard provided an account of the events that led to Smith's death, claiming that Smith had been shot during a robbery attempt by two unknown men at a gas station. However, as detectives from the Birmingham Police Department delved deeper into the case, inconsistencies began to emerge in Heard's story.
Through their investigation, detectives uncovered evidence that contradicted the initial robbery claim. The focus of the investigation soon shifted from a random act of violence to a domestic dispute that had taken a fatal turn. Evidence suggested that the shooting had not occurred at a gas station as claimed, but rather at the residence that Marvin Smith Jr. and Carlos Heard shared.
Based on the evidence gathered, investigators concluded that Heard was responsible for the shooting death of his boyfriend. He was taken into custody and the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office subsequently issued a warrant charging him with the murder of Marvin Smith Jr. Following his arrest, Carlos Heard was booked into the Jefferson County Jail.

After being indicted by a grand jury, Carlos Heard stood trial for the murder of Marvin Smith Jr. During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence that pointed to a domestic altercation as the catalyst for the fatal shooting. The defense maintained Heard's innocence, but after hearing the evidence and testimony, the jury found Carlos Heard guilty of the murder of Marvin Smith Jr. Following his conviction, he was sentenced to a lengthy prison term for his crime.
