On June 3, 2017, 29-year-old Mike Mulwa Ngangi was fatally shot during a robbery at the Citgo gas station located at 9800 Parkway East in Birmingham, Alabama. Ngangi, originally from Kenya, had moved to the United States in 2008, joining family members in Georgia. He initially worked as a department store clerk in the Atlanta area and later for Shaw Industries, a carpet manufacturer based in Dalton, Georgia.
