On October 5, 2024, at approximately 3:06 a.m., Birmingham Police Department officers responded to multiple ShotSpotter alerts indicating 42 rounds fired near the 800 block of 3rd Avenue West. Upon arrival, they discovered 26-year-old Johndarius Decareious Ward unresponsive inside a vehicle, suffering from gunshot wounds. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services pronounced him deceased at the scene.
