In the spring of 2017, the life of a young, 21-year-old Caucasian woman named Jessica Newcomb was tragically cut short in a Mobile, Alabama hotel room. On the morning of May 24th, police responded to a call at the Budgetel Inns & Suites on the I-65 Service Road. Inside one of the rooms, they discovered Jessica on the floor, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound. She was a mother to a young son and originally from Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
The investigation into her death moved swiftly.
Within a day, authorities had a suspect in custody: 27-year-old Frederick O'Neal Knight Jr. The trail that led to Knight began with surveillance footage from the hotel, which captured his vehicle. The subsequent investigation revealed a grim story of an online encounter that turned deadly. Knight and Newcomb had reportedly connected through the website Backpage.com, arranging a meeting where he solicited her for oral sex in exchange for $60.
The situation escalated into a fatal argument after the encounter. Knight demanded the return of his money as well as some Xanax pills. When Jessica refused, he shot her. The entire tragic event unfolded in front of her friend, Heather Wallace, who was present in the hotel room and served as the sole witness to the crime.
Frederick O'Neal Knight Jr. was initially charged with murder and robbery. However, the legal proceedings took a turn in November 2021. After a jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict, Knight entered into a plea agreement. He pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. In a separate legal matter in July 2023, while having been released with time served for the death of Jessica Newcomb, Knight was sentenced to 37 months in federal prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
