On May 9, 2017, the life of 27-year-old Sheneice Sumpter, an African American mother, was tragically cut short in Mobile, Alabama. Her body was discovered inside her vehicle, which was parked behind an abandoned house on Bay Road. An investigation revealed she had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head. The promising future of the single mother, who worked as an insurance adjuster and was known for her dedication to her nine-year-old son, was abruptly and violently ended.
The day
after the discovery of Sumpter’s body, authorities arrested her 32-year-old boyfriend, Peter Gales, in connection with her death. According to family members, the couple’s relationship had been marred by domestic violence, and Sumpter had been making plans to relocate to Jacksonville, Florida, to start a new life. It was a move she would never get to make. The investigation suggested that an argument, reportedly sparked by a phone call Gales received from another woman while he and Sumpter were returning from a trip to Pensacola, Florida, escalated to a fatal conclusion.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Gales drove the vehicle with Sumpter's body to the secluded location where she was later found. He then reportedly turned off her phone and attempted to create an alibi by sending text messages to her phone, inquiring about her whereabouts. Despite his claims of innocence, and his mother’s insistence that he had an alibi, the evidence presented during his trial painted a grim picture of the final moments of Sheneice Sumpter's life.
In June of 2021, a Mobile County jury found Peter Gales guilty of the murder of Sheneice Sumpter. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison, bringing a measure of justice to a family shattered by their loss.
