On May 7, 2024, 17-year-old Brandon "Tayy Dior" Thomas, a Black transgender girl from Mobile, Alabama, was tragically shot and killed. Police responded to reports of gunfire around 3:30 a.m. and discovered her body in the front yard of a residence, near a vehicle that had crashed into the house. Later that day, authorities arrested 20-year-old Carl Washington Jr., charging him with murder, discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle, and attempting to evade arrest.
