In the late spring of 2022, Cierra Jackson, a 14-year-old Black female from Hockley, Texas, was in Mobile, Alabama, to spend part of her summer vacation with family. Her visit was tragically cut short on the night of May 31. Cierra was a passenger in a car with friends, riding along Michael Donald Avenue, when the vehicle was suddenly sprayed with bullets.
Cierra was struck by the gunfire and died from her injuries.
The senseless act of violence that claimed the life of an innocent teenager sent shockwaves through the community. The Mobile Police Department launched an intensive investigation to bring those responsible to justice. Their efforts led to the arrests of three individuals in connection with the fatal shooting. The suspects were identified as Archie Petite, 18-year-old Lamonyae Forrest, and Semaj James, who had turned 16 just one week before the murder.
Under Alabama law, James was eligible to be charged as an adult. In March 2024, a Mobile County grand jury indicted all three suspects on capital murder charges. The District Attorney's office later filed notice that they would not be seeking the death penalty in the case. Both Forrest and James, who were teenagers when the shooting occurred, applied for youthful offender status, which would have resulted in a more lenient sentence if convicted.
In June 2024, a Mobile Circuit Court judge denied youthful offender status to Lamonyae Forrest and Semaj James, allowing their cases to proceed in adult court. Archie Petite was subsequently convicted for his role in Cierra's murder. As of June 2024, the legal proceedings against Forrest and James were ongoing.
Cierra's family has been left to grapple with the profound and senseless loss of a young life full of promise. In her memory, her grandmother established 'Cierra's Cause' to raise awareness and advocate against gun violence in the hopes of preventing similar tragedies.
