On October 16, 1976, 23-year-old Cheryl Lynn "Sis" Gazzier Payton was working as a convenience store clerk in Mobile County, Alabama. That day, she was abducted at gunpoint by Thomas Warren Whisenhant, who drove her to a secluded wooded area. There, he raped her in the front seat of his pickup truck before fatally shooting her in the head with a .32 caliber pistol. After the murder, he dragged her body into the nearby woods and fled the scene.
