In the early evening of December 6, 2014, a sense of normalcy was shattered in Mobile, Alabama, leaving a family and community to grapple with a sudden and tragic loss. On that Saturday, 16-year-old Raven Alexandria Hamilton, a sophomore at Murphy High School, was innocently sitting in a vehicle in the 400 block of North Brazier Drive. What should have been an ordinary evening turned into a scene of violence when shots were fired into the car.
A bullet struck the young woman, inflicting a fatal wound. She was rushed to the University of South Alabama Children's and Women's hospital, but tragically, she succumbed to her injuries.
The Mobile Police Department quickly launched a homicide investigation. Within a day of the senseless shooting, detectives identified a suspect. On December 7, 2014, 19-year-old Jamarcus Marquis Mahone was taken into custody. Following an interview with investigators, Mahone was arrested and charged with the murder of Raven Hamilton and for shooting into an occupied vehicle. Authorities later revealed a heartbreaking detail: Mahone had allegedly fired into the vehicle under the mistaken belief that it belonged to someone else.
The legal process moved forward, and in September 2017, Jamarcus Mahone was convicted of felony murder for his role in Raven Hamilton's death. Two months later, in November 2017, he was sentenced to life in prison. The Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals subsequently upheld his murder conviction in May 2019, ensuring that the person responsible for the untimely death of the vibrant teenager would remain behind bars. Family and friends mourned the loss of the young girl, who was remembered as a huge fan of Jordan tennis shoes, and laid her to rest in a pair of them.
