In the early spring of 2017, the life of 22-year-old Tamara Caltrell White was tragically cut short in Mobile, Alabama. A native of the nearby community of Mt. Vernon and a 2014 graduate of Saraland High School, Tamara was known for her outgoing and funny personality, a young woman full of life who cherished her family and friends. Her world revolved around her beloved young son, Kendall.
On the night of March 6, 2017, a dispute erupted in the parking lot of a McDonald's on Moffett Road.
The argument was between a 19-year-old named Harold Wallace and an employee of the fast-food restaurant. In a senseless act of violence, Wallace fired a gun, but the bullet missed its intended target. Instead, it struck Tamara White, an innocent bystander who found herself in the wrong place at the wrong time. In the chaotic moments that followed, her friends desperately tried to rush her to the hospital. Their journey was cut short when their vehicle crashed into a tree. It was at the scene of this accident that Tamara was pronounced dead, the victim of a stray bullet fired in a conflict she had no part in.
The Mobile Police Department acted swiftly, and within a day of the shooting, Harold Wallace was taken into custody and charged with the murder of Tamara White. The legal proceedings that followed brought more anguish to Tamara's grieving family. In June of 2018, Wallace, then 20 years old, sought 'youthful offender' status from the court, a designation that could have spared him from a potential death penalty. The judge, however, denied this request, a decision that brought a small measure of relief to Tamara's loved ones. Following this ruling, Wallace pleaded not guilty to the charge of capital murder.
Ultimately, Harold Wallace was convicted for the murder of Tamara White and was sentenced to serve life in prison. His sentence was carried out at the Fountain Correctional Facility in Atmore, Alabama. The story took a final, grim turn on January 11, 2022, when Harold Wallace, at the age of 24, was fatally stabbed by another inmate, bringing a violent end to the life of the man who had so carelessly ended another's.
