In the late hours of a Tuesday in Mobile, Alabama, the life of 41-year-old April Ruggs was tragically cut short. On November 1, 2020, at approximately 10:58 p.m., police were called to the 2600 block of Farnell Drive following a report of a shooting. Investigators determined that one or more unknown individuals had fired multiple shots into the residence from outside. Several of these rounds penetrated the home and struck Ruggs.
She was rushed to a local hospital but ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
The investigation into the shooting death of the female victim continued for months. In January of the following year, a significant development occurred when authorities from the Mobile Police Department made an arrest in connection with the homicide. Lashaun Lamar Pruitt was taken into custody and subsequently charged with the murder of April Ruggs. He was accused of being the individual who fired the fatal shots into the Farnell Drive home that evening.
The violence connected to this case did not end with Ruggs's death. In a subsequent and related incident, another man, Reginald Paul Pryor, was arrested for a shooting that took place on the same street. While Pryor was not charged in Ruggs's murder, it was reported that he had been rumored to have been involved. Investigators testified that Pryor's actions were an attempt to preempt any potential retaliation for Ruggs's death. This secondary shooting critically wounded a 5-year-old boy, adding another layer of tragedy to the unfolding events.
