On a dark morning in Mobile, Alabama, the life of 24-year-old Delauna Powell Anderson, a dedicated single mother, was tragically cut short. It was October 18, 2016, and Anderson was on her way to work in Mississippi, a journey she made to provide for her 5-year-old daughter. As she paused at a stop sign at the intersection of the I-10 West Service Road and Duval Street, she was fatally shot multiple times in what investigators believe was a failed carjacking attempt.
Despite being grievously wounded, Anderson managed to drive onto the interstate, but her strength failed her, and her car came to a stop at the Michigan Avenue overpass where she was found deceased.
The senseless act of violence sparked an intensive investigation by the Mobile Police Department. A crucial breakthrough in the case came from an anonymous tip, which led detectives to two suspects: 18-year-old Antonio Lang and 16-year-old Iseral Hall. On December 1, 2016, both teenagers were taken into custody. Lang, who was already in jail on a separate robbery charge, was charged with two counts of capital murder, while Hall faced a charge of felony murder. During a preliminary hearing, evidence was presented that included a 35-minute surveillance video from a nearby church showing the events surrounding the shooting. Testimony also revealed that other motorists had seen two figures on the roadside and had driven through the stop sign out of fear for their safety.
The legal proceedings brought a measure of justice for Delauna Anderson's family. In December 2020, Iseral Hall was convicted for his part in the murder and was sentenced to 25 years in prison. Investigators believed that Antonio Lang was the one who pulled the trigger. In April 2021, Lang pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to life in prison for his role in the young mother's death.
