In the late summer of 2017, the life of Toney Felix Myers Jr., a 39-year-old male from Birmingham, Alabama, was tragically cut short. On Wednesday, September 20, 2017, Myers was involved in a fatal altercation that would end in his untimely death. The incident unfolded at a residence in the 100 block of 14th Avenue NW in Birmingham.
Myers had gone to the residence in search of his girlfriend.
While there, an argument erupted between Myers and another man, 35-year-old Kevin Lewayne Speakman, also of Birmingham. The verbal confrontation soon escalated into a physical fight. In a violent turn of events, Speakman produced a handgun and shot Myers. Despite his grave injury, Myers managed to get into his vehicle and attempted to drive himself to the hospital for medical attention. His desperate bid to survive ended when he crashed his car en route. He was subsequently transported to a hospital, but tragically succumbed to the gunshot wound.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Kevin Lewayne Speakman fled the scene before law enforcement arrived. However, detectives investigating the homicide were quickly able to identify him as the primary suspect. A search for Speakman was initiated, and an arrest warrant for murder was issued. The following day, through the collaborative efforts of detectives and the U.S. Marshal's Fugitive Task Force, Speakman was located at a hotel in Irondale. He was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Jefferson County Jail. Speakman was formally charged with the murder of Toney Felix Myers Jr., with his bond set at $150,000.
