In the early evening of Saturday, September 30, 2017, a report of a traffic accident near the intersection of Adventist Boulevard and Wynn Drive in Huntsville, Alabama, took a grim turn. Upon arrival, first responders discovered the driver of the vehicle was not the victim of a mere collision, but of a fatal act of violence. Inside the car was 34-year-old George Carl Jarrett of Meridianville, who had sustained a gunshot wound.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators believe that Jarrett was driving along Adventist Boulevard when he was shot, causing him to lose control of his vehicle and run off the road. The initial call to authorities about a traffic accident belied the tragic reality of a homicide. The investigation into Jarrett's death quickly identified a suspect.
Following their investigation, Huntsville Police Major Crimes Investigators arrested Taurus DeWayne Oliver, a 39-year-old resident of Huntsville. Oliver was charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of George Jarrett. Authorities indicated that the shooting was preceded by some form of argument between Oliver and Jarrett. Further investigation into the matter was ongoing, and at the time of Oliver's arrest, the possibility of other arrests was not ruled out. A grand jury later indicted Oliver in the slaying of Jarrett.
