In the fading light of a November evening in 2017, Keith Derichard Duncan, a 44-year-old man, lost his life in a burst of violence that shattered the quiet of a Birmingham, Alabama neighborhood. The fatal encounter, which occurred on Saturday, November 25th, stemmed from a heated argument that escalated with shocking suddenness.
The tragic events unfolded in the 100 block of Idlewild Circle, a residential area in eastern Jefferson County.
It was there that Keith Duncan and another man, 26-year-old Terrance Demetrius Hardy, became embroiled in a dispute. The exact nature of their disagreement remains somewhat unclear, but it was potent enough to lead to gunfire. In the midst of the confrontation, Hardy allegedly produced a weapon and shot Duncan. The single gunshot proved to be fatal, and Keith Derichard Duncan was pronounced dead at the scene. He was a Black male.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement was summoned to the scene. Responding to a call of a person shot, Jefferson County sheriff's deputies discovered Duncan's body. Their investigation into the homicide quickly pointed them toward Terrance Demetrius Hardy as the primary suspect.
Within a short period, Hardy was taken into custody by the authorities. His arrest brought a swift, though not final, resolution to the initial phase of the investigation. Following his apprehension, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office formally charged Terrance Demetrius Hardy with murder in connection with the death of Keith Duncan.
