In the early hours of New Year's Day in Birmingham, Alabama, the life of 23-year-old Nathaniel Ladell Young Jr., a male, was tragically cut short. Just after 2:00 a.m. on January 1, 2025, gunfire erupted near the intersection of Greymont Avenue and Center Street. Responding officers found two individuals with gunshot wounds. Young was rushed to UAB Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
A former Gardendale High School graduate and a collegiate linebacker for Alabama State University, his death marked a sorrowful beginning to the new year for his family and friends.
The investigation into the shooting led to the apprehension of two suspects. The first to be taken into custody was 30-year-old Cornelius Dontae Houston. Subsequently, a second suspect, 22-year-old Armarious Anderson, was also arrested. Both men have been charged with capital murder in connection with the death of Nathaniel Young. The charges against Anderson are more extensive, as he also faces three counts of attempted murder. One of these additional charges stems from the serious injuries sustained by the second victim in the same incident.
Further details surrounding the event indicate a chaotic scene. An officer on patrol to deter celebratory gunfire heard the shots and attempted to intercept a fleeing vehicle. It is alleged that Anderson then fired at the police officer, who returned fire in self-defense. Fortunately, no one was injured during this exchange. Both Houston and Anderson are being held without bond at the Jefferson County Jail as the community awaits justice for the promising young life that was lost.
