On January 8, 2024, at approximately 2:00 a.m., Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) officers responded to reports of a shooting near the 2400 Arcade Room on North Tryon Street in Charlotte, North Carolina. Upon arrival, they discovered 30-year-old Daniel Clement Thomas lying in the roadway, suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency Medical Services transported Thomas to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Witnesses reported that Thomas had been in the parking lot of the arcade establishment when an altercation occurred, leading to the shooting. His vehicle was found at the scene with the engine running, and personal belongings, including his phone, were inside. Despite a thorough investigation, CMPD detectives, in consultation with the district attorney's office, determined that the shooting was justified, and no charges were filed.
Daniel Thomas was a father of seven children and was on parole at the time of his death. His mother, Rosie Lee Sanders, expressed profound grief over the loss of her son, describing him as her best friend, support, and protector. She emphasized his efforts to turn his life around and called for justice and answers regarding the circumstances of his death.
Funeral services for Thomas were held on January 19, 2024, at the House of Rosadale Home of Funerals in Charlotte, providing an opportunity for family and friends to honor his memory.
