On a Friday afternoon in Birmingham, Alabama, 38-year-old Kevin McGhee was among four men whose lives were cut short in a hail of gunfire. The incident, which occurred on February 16, 2024, unfolded at a neighborhood car wash in the Smithfield community. McGhee, along with his cousin Terrell Edwards, 38, Cortez Ray, 32, and Talton 'TJ' Tate, 36, were all victims of what police described as a targeted drive-by shooting.
When authorities arrived at the scene, they found three of the men unresponsive on the ground. McGhee was rushed to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries but was later pronounced dead.
The brazen daylight shooting sent shockwaves through the community and left several families mourning an unimaginable loss. The individual charged in connection with the quadruple homicide was identified as Marian Charlie. He was booked into the Jefferson County Jail and is facing serious charges, including capital murder of two or more victims and capital murder in the presence of a child under the age of 14. While the arrest brought a measure of progress in the quest for justice, the motive behind the deadly shooting has not been publicly disclosed. The case against Marian Charlie is expected to proceed through the legal system.
