On July 12, 2023, 28-year-old Firefighter Jordan Melton was critically injured in a shooting at Birmingham Fire Station 9 in the Norwood community. The incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. as Melton and fellow firefighter Jamal Jones were performing routine maintenance in the station's bay area. An unidentified assailant entered through the open bay door and opened fire, striking both firefighters.
