Deundray Dominique Cottrell, a 31-year-old Black male, was visiting his sister's new home in Birmingham, Alabama, for the Fourth of July holiday in 2024. An Atlanta resident, he had traveled to his hometown with his boyfriend of over two years, Julian Taylor Morris. The celebratory mood of the evening took a sharp turn when fireworks began to go off.
