Deundray Cottrell, a 31-year-old Black/African American man, traveled from Atlanta to Birmingham, Alabama, for the Fourth of July holiday in 2024, spending the celebration with relatives and friends at a family member's home in the South East Lake area. Cottrell, who worked in marketing and was pursuing a doctoral degree, had come to Birmingham with Julian Taylor Morris, whom police later described as his romantic partner.
