In the fall of 2022, the life of 33-year-old Jesse Dewayne Cummings Sr. was tragically cut short in Birmingham, Alabama. On the evening of Friday, November 4th, officers from the city's North Precinct were dispatched to the 100 block of 50th Street North in the Kingston neighborhood after receiving a report of a person shot. Upon their arrival just after 5:00 p.m., they discovered Cummings unresponsive inside a vehicle, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service personnel pronounced him deceased at the scene.
Initial investigations by the Birmingham Police Department suggested that the shooting was the result of an ongoing dispute. Detectives worked to uncover the events that led to the fatal encounter. Their efforts soon focused on a person of interest, and within a few days, they were able to secure a warrant.
On Tuesday, November 8, 2022, the investigation culminated in an arrest. Birmingham police, with the assistance of the department's Crime Reduction Team, apprehended 41-year-old Antonio M. Lucas Jr. in the 4300 block of Richard Arrington Jr. Boulevard. Following the arrest, the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office formally charged Lucas with capital murder in connection with the death of Jesse Cummings Sr. He was subsequently booked into the Jefferson County Jail, where he was held without bond. The motive behind the deadly shooting was reported by police to be an ongoing feud between Cummings and Lucas.
