Arthur Douglas Hudson, 54, was shot to death behind his home on the 6600 block of 1st Avenue South in East Lake, apparently as part of an ongoing domestic dispute. Activist Mercutio Southall was arrested at the scene and charged with manslaughter. A grand jury raised the charge to intentional murder in March 2020. Judge Stephen Wallace dismissed the case in March 2022 on the basis that Southall was immune from prosecution under Alabama's "Stand Your Ground" law.
