Clarence Farley, a 61-year-old Black man, was found mortally wounded on the afternoon of June 5, 2019, in the parking lot at 1212 33rd Street Southwest in Birmingham after police were sent there on a report of an assault. Officers arrived to find him unresponsive beside a vehicle with an apparent stab wound, and Birmingham Fire and Rescue rushed him toward UAB Hospital, but he died on the way.
Early police statements described the violence as a domestic altercation, the kind of sudden, intimate eruption that turns an ordinary afternoon into a permanent dividing line for a family.
Investigators quickly focused on Clarence Farley’s brother, Jimmy Farley, who was taken into custody in connection with the killing on the day it happened. Contemporary local reports said Jimmy Farley was booked into the Jefferson County Jail and faced a murder charge, with authorities identifying him as the lone suspect publicly tied to the case. Later court reporting indicated the case did not end with a murder conviction: Jimmy Farley eventually pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter in September 2022 after the stabbing that killed his brother during an argument.
