Rodrick Dewayne Tolbert, a 32-year-old man from Birmingham, Alabama, carried the weight of a summer night for months before it finally claimed him. On June 16, 2018, what had been a house party in the Powderly neighborhood turned tense during an altercation at a home on the 2100 block of Dawson Avenue Southwest. In the chaos, Tolbert was shot, and the injury left him fighting for his life long after the scene itself went quiet.
The struggle did not end when the police tape came down.
Tolbert lived on, but the gunshot wounds never truly let go, and the damage followed him through hospitals and long stretches of recovery. On March 21, 2019, he died at Princeton Baptist Medical Center, and his death was attributed to complications from those earlier gunshot wounds—turning an old burst of violence into a new entry in the city’s homicide count.
In the aftermath, the public record offered little closure. No arrest was reported in connection with Tolbert’s killing in the account of the case, and no suspect was publicly named there as the investigation remained unresolved.
