In the spring of 2020, the life of 15-year-old Jaylen Derrell Terry was tragically cut short in Birmingham, Alabama. The fatal incident occurred on May 16, when the young male was a passenger in a vehicle driven by his father, Reico Terry.
The tragic sequence of events began to unfold on a Saturday afternoon when Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies, who were accompanied by a television crew, reportedly witnessed a drug transaction at a gas station.
When the deputies attempted to approach the elder Terry's vehicle, he sped away, initiating a high-speed chase. The pursuit continued onto an interstate before moving to surface streets.
The chase ended catastrophically when Reico Terry's vehicle ran a red light and was struck by an 18-wheeler. Jaylen Derrell Terry, who was in the backseat of his father's car, sustained fatal injuries in the collision and was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Following the crash, his father attempted to flee the scene on foot but was quickly apprehended by deputies.
In the aftermath of his son's death, Reico Terry, then 41 years old, faced a litany of charges. Initially, he was charged with offenses including unlawful distribution of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and felony eluding. Subsequently, the most serious charge of reckless murder was added in connection with Jaylen's death.
