Who is responsible for Roderick's murder?
Roderick Bowers, a 34-year-old Black man, was killed just after midnight on December 14, 2009, in Birmingham’s Ensley neighborhood, in a quiet house on Avenue H that turned chaotic in a matter of minutes. Police said he was found inside his home at 1304 Avenue H, struck by gunfire to the head and chest, and he was pronounced dead at the scene, becoming the city’s 61st homicide of that year.
Investigators later described a brief, chilling sequence: two men walked up to Bowers’s residence and knocked. He opened the door and let them inside, and soon after, multiple gunshots rang out. Moments later, the two men were seen coming back out of the house and leaving, while officers arrived to find Bowers’s family outside, overwhelmed by what had happened behind the door.
In the days that followed, authorities said the case remained active but without immediate resolution. The Birmingham Police Department reported that no arrests had been made and urged anyone with information—no matter how small it seemed—to contact homicide detectives or Crime Stoppers, emphasizing that tips could be provided anonymously.
As the city absorbed another late-night killing, Bowers’s loved ones were left to bring him home in the way they could: through a farewell shaped by church and family. An obituary notice reported that funeral services were held on December 19, 2009, at Shady Grove Baptist Church, followed by burial at Highland Memorial Gardens.
