In the early morning hours of April 1, 2021, the life of 44-year-old Louis Anglish Bryant Sr. was cut short in his Birmingham, Alabama, home. Just before 4:30 a.m., a 911 call was made from his residence on Vanderbilt Road, reporting that he had been shot. The caller, his partner of 11 years, Jasmine Mari Drake, initially claimed they had been playing with a gun when it accidentally discharged.
Bryant and Drake, who shared three children, were reportedly just two weeks away from getting married.
An altercation between Bryant and Drake ultimately led to the fatal shooting. A few days after the incident, police arrested 29-year-old Jasmine Drake and charged her with capital murder. The charge was particularly serious as the shooting occurred in the presence of juveniles under the age of 14 who were related to Bryant. Drake was subsequently held in the Jefferson County Jail without bond.
The case took a significant turn as the investigation progressed. Evidence emerged suggesting a history of domestic abuse. Text messages from Drake to Bryant's cousin alleged that he had been physically abusive to both her and their child. Further supporting these claims were diary entries from Drake's oldest daughter, which also described abuse at the hands of Bryant. After five weeks in jail, Drake was released on a $100,000 bond.
As Jasmine Drake's jury trial for capital murder was set to begin in April 2024, the prosecution, after reviewing the facts of the case and speaking with the victim's family, decided to drop the charge against her. In a surprising development, members of Louis Bryant's own family testified that they believed Drake had acted in self-defense. Consequently, a judge officially dismissed the capital murder charge against her with prejudice.
