On the inaugural day of 2022, the city of Birmingham was marked by its first homicide of the year with the death of Fernando Jose Cruz-Soto. The 20-year-old male was fatally wounded by gunfire in the early hours of January 1st. The incident that claimed Cruz-Soto's life unfolded in the western part of the city, where police responded to reports of a person shot.
