On January 1, 2022, at approximately 2:03 a.m., 20-year-old Fernando Jose Cruz-Soto of McCalla, Alabama, was found suffering from a gunshot wound in a parking lot on the 2300 block of 4th Avenue South in Birmingham. A Birmingham Police officer, working off-duty nearby, discovered Cruz-Soto and immediately called for medical assistance. Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel transported him to UAB Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
