Nathan Gemeinhart was a 42-year-old White male from Birmingham, Alabama, a husband and father to four young children. A close friend remembered him as the “kindest, gentlest spirit” with a “heart of gold” who would do anything for you and never met a stranger. His family was active in their church and community, supporting a local Christian school.
On August 8, 2022, Gemeinhart was reported missing after he went to check on rental properties he owned in west Birmingham.
The search ended in tragedy the following morning. On August 9, firefighters were called to a blaze at an abandoned house on Eufaula Avenue. After extinguishing the fire, they discovered a body inside. Gemeinhart’s car was found just a block away, and the Jefferson County coroner later confirmed the remains were his.
The investigation led police to a suspect, Youit De Witt Jones, a 35-year-old man who lived near the abandoned house. Police believed the attack was a random act of violence and that the two men had never met. The investigation revealed that Gemeinhart had been shot in the back and his body was dismembered; his head and hands had been removed. Evidence found at Jones’s home included Gemeinhart’s blood and duct tape with his DNA on it.
On August 10, 2022, Jones was arrested in Ardmore, Oklahoma, following an unrelated attempted carjacking. He was extradited back to Alabama and charged in connection with Gemeinhart’s death. After initially refusing to leave his jail cell for his arraignment, Jones eventually pleaded not guilty to the charges.
In August 2026, Jones’s trial began. Prosecutors argued that he had kidnapped Gemeinhart, killed him inside his house, and then moved the body to the abandoned home and set it on fire to cover up the crime. On August 7, 2026, a Jefferson County jury found Youit Dewitt Jones guilty of capital murder involving kidnapping, abuse of a corpse, and second-degree arson.
As of August 2026, the case had proceeded to the penalty phase, where a sentence would be determined.
