On the night of August 28, 2022, Ke’Mon Latrelle Nord, a 20-year-old Black male from Bessemer, was caught in a burst of gunfire at the University Crossings apartment complex in the 200 block of 3rd Avenue Southwest in Birmingham. Police were sent there just before 9 p.m. after reports of shots fired, and when officers arrived they found two men down in the parking lot, both suffering from gunshot wounds. Nord was pronounced dead at the scene by Birmingham Fire and Rescue, while the other wounded man was rushed to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Local reporting described the violence as a shootout, and the city’s ShotSpotter system recorded more than 20 rounds in the area, underscoring how chaotic and sudden the attack was.
What emerged from the early investigation painted a picture of a gun battle rather than a single isolated shot. According to police information relayed in local coverage, multiple people fired weapons during the exchange, and officers said the gunfire involved more than one type of weapon, including a rifle and a shotgun. That detail gave the case an even more frenzied feel: a crowded apartment-complex parking lot, a storm of bullets, one young man dead where he fell, and another left fighting for his life after being taken from the scene.
