On a Wednesday afternoon, August 19, 2020, the life of a 24-year-old Black male, Cadarius Killian, was cut short in Birmingham, Alabama. At approximately 4:33 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 7500 block of 66th Courtway South following reports of a person shot. Upon their arrival, they discovered Killian in a grassy area, unresponsive and suffering from a gunshot wound.
Despite the immediate response from Birmingham Fire and Rescue, Cadarius Killian was pronounced deceased at the scene. The initial investigation into his death brought to light that neighbors in the area had heard multiple gunshots. Detectives began to piece together the events leading up to the fatal shooting, with early indications suggesting that the motive could be connected to retaliation for prior illegal activities.
In the immediate aftermath of the incident, authorities had not taken any suspects into custody. The Birmingham Police Department's Homicide Unit opened an investigation into the death of Cadarius Killian and appealed to the public for any information that might lead to an arrest in the case. As of the day following the shooting, the investigation was ongoing, and no arrests had been made.
