In the quiet predawn hours of July 5, 2024, a sense of unease settled over a Birmingham, Alabama neighborhood. Renard Keith West, a 55-year-old male, was at his home on Cotton Avenue when a man's erratic behavior in the street outside drew his attention. Concerned, West stepped out of the safety of his house to investigate the disturbance. Tragically, it was a decision that would cost him his life.
Shortly after venturing outside, he was shot and killed in his own front yard.
The sound of gunfire prompted a shot spotter alert just before 5 a.m., summoning Birmingham police to the scene. There, they discovered West's lifeless body. His younger brother, who arrived later, described him as a peaceful and beloved individual who was never the aggressor in any situation. The individual, identified as Kishanell 'Day' Huckabee, was found to be in possession of a handgun and was taken into custody without incident. He is currently being held at the Jefferson County jail without bond in connection with the death of Renard Keith West.
