In the winter of 2017, the life of 19-year-old James Rutledge was tragically cut short in Mobile, Alabama. On the night of December 21st, at approximately 11:17 p.m., Rutledge and another young man, 20-year-old Kenneth Foster, were discovered deceased in front of a residence on the 2100 block of Felix Street. Both men had been shot, their lives ending in a sudden act of violence that would soon become the focus of a double homicide investigation by the Mobile Police Department.

Less than a month after the tragic event, on January 10, 2018, the Mobile Police Department announced the arrest of 21-year-old Darrell Watts. Watts was taken into custody and subsequently booked into Metro Jail, facing two counts of murder for his alleged role in the deaths of Rutledge and Foster. The legal proceedings against Darrell Watts culminated in a trial where the details of that fatal night were brought to light. According to investigators, Watts, Foster, and Rutledge were together in a car when an argument broke out. In March 2024, a Mobile County jury found Darrell Watts guilty on two counts of murder.
