Bradley Neil Watkins, a 50-year-old man, died on January 13, 2018, in Fairfield, Alabama, after gunfire tore through the America’s Best Inn & Suites on Kelco Place. Accounts published afterward identified him as a Bessemer business owner, and later memorial listings placed his death in Fairfield that same day. The reporting that survives paints a sudden, chaotic scene: Watkins was not described as the aggressor in the violence, but as the man whose life was cut short when bullets reached the
place where he was staying.
Later summaries of the case say the shooting was connected to a burst of violence involving a group of teenagers gathered at the motel. According to those accounts, scores of rounds were fired in what appeared to be a retaliatory shootout, and Watkins was struck by a stray bullet while inside a third-floor room. That detail gives the case an especially grim edge: by the time the gunfire ended, the man who died was not presented as someone in the feud, but as the person caught in its path.
What makes the story feel even colder is how little public closure appears to have followed. In the sources reviewed, Watkins’ death continued to be memorialized years later as a fatal gun-violence case, but those same public summaries did not name a suspect or document an arrest, indictment, trial, or conviction tied specifically to his killing.
