On February 27, 2021, 25-year-old Montez Undra Tolbert Jr. of Bessemer, Alabama, was involved in a fatal car accident on Interstate 59 near mile marker 118 in the Fairfield area. The incident occurred around 12:50 p.m. when two southbound vehicles sideswiped each other, causing the Chevrolet Cobalt in which Tolbert was a passenger to lose control, leave the roadway, and overturn multiple times.
