On October 29, 2022, Ray B. Dover Jr., a 60-year-old man from Fairfield, Alabama, was riding his bicycle along Grasselli Road when violence that had begun miles away reached him without warning. Investigators said a vehicle came up on him in the 6700 block of Grasselli Road, struck him, and kept going, leaving him fatally injured at the scene.
Authorities described the crash as part of a rapid, unfolding rampage that started earlier that evening at a hotel on Kelco Place in Fairfield.
Deputies were dispatched around 5:31 p.m. to a shooting there, where witnesses reported a woman argued with a man and tried to get away before he pulled a gun and shot her. The suspect was later identified as Cortney Dion Price. Deputies said he fled on foot after the shooting.
About an hour later, deputies said Price reappeared on Seminole Road in Fairfield and took a vehicle from a family at gunpoint. Minutes after that reported carjacking, a vehicle matching the stolen one’s description was the same one investigators linked to the hit-and-run that killed Dover on Grasselli Road.
The chase ended in Birmingham. Deputies spotted the stolen vehicle near Erie Street, pursued it briefly, and said Price wrecked it before being taken into custody. Jail records list multiple charges filed in connection with October 29, 2022, including murder counts as well as robbery in the first degree aggravated assault in the second degree escape in the third degree, resisting arrest, and assault in the second degree. The inmate listing shows he was held as a pretrial inmate at the Jefferson County Jail in Bessemer with bond amounts recorded on the booking.
