In the summer of 2018, the life of Kijuan Harrell, a 20-year-old Black male, was tragically cut short in Birmingham, Alabama. On the evening of Saturday, June 23, Harrell was discovered inside a parked vehicle on Valley Avenue, the victim of a fatal shooting. The discovery sent ripples of shock and grief through his community, leaving friends and family to mourn the sudden and violent loss of a young man on the cusp of his adult life.
In the immediate aftermath, authorities launched an
investigation into the homicide. Details surrounding the circumstances of the shooting were scarce, and the initial stages of the inquiry yielded no immediate suspects. As days turned into weeks, and then into a year, the case remained unsolved, with no arrests made in connection with Harrell's death. The lack of progress was a source of ongoing pain for his loved ones, who were left without answers and with a profound sense of injustice.
In an effort to generate new leads and bring closure to the grieving family, the Governor of Alabama issued a proclamation in July 2019, offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for Kijuan Harrell's murder.
