In the spring of 2016, the life of James Noah “Jim” Bennefield Jr., a 46-year-old man from Cullman, Alabama, was tragically cut short in Birmingham. On the morning of April 20th, a resident in the East Lake neighborhood of Birmingham made a grim discovery in her driveway – the body of a man who had been shot. The victim was later identified as Bennefield, a commercial truck driver and a veteran of the U.S. Army.
His death was the result of a senseless act of violence that would soon unfold into a story of a robbery gone fatally wrong.
Investigators piecing together the events leading to Bennefield's death quickly identified two young suspects, both teenagers at the time. The investigation revealed that the two had arranged to meet Bennefield under the guise of a sale. However, their true intention was to rob him. During the course of the robbery, Bennefield was shot and killed. His body was then left in the driveway where it was discovered the following morning, while the suspects fled in his vehicle.
The Birmingham Police Department acted swiftly, and within a short period, the two teenage suspects were apprehended. They were subsequently charged with capital murder in connection with the death of James Bennefield. The gravity of the charges reflected the violent nature of the crime and the tragic loss of a man described by his family as a beloved husband, son, and father. The community was left to mourn the loss of a man who was remembered for his service to his country and his work as a truck driver, his life abruptly and violently ended.
